Jan Stuebing Smyth’s career began in a wine shop in the 1970s when Americans were first discovering the joy of wine. She went on to work for Bon Appétit magazine’s book division, and in public relations and marketing positions for Food and Wines from France (Sopexa), Trefethen Vineyards, and Frederick Wildman and Sons. Ms. Smyth was recruited to establish Wine Australia, where, during her 13-year tenure as the trade organization’s director for the U.S., wines from Australia grew from obscurity to the number-two position among all imports. She created an internship and an online wine course, led trips for journalists and the wine trade, and presented seminars on Australian wine and wine marketing for the likes of Columbia University, Stanford University, and the CIA. An instructor in the CIA degree programs, Ms. Smyth has a BA from Indiana University, is a former board member of the Society of Wine Educators, and passed the WSET Advanced Course with distinction.
